Hot take: I saw a robot in a grocery store and it changed my whole view on AI

I was at the Safeway on 5th Avenue yesterday, just grabbing milk. They had this little robot rolling down the aisle, scanning the shelves. It was checking for empty spots and price tags. I watched it for a minute, and it just beeped and moved on, totally ignoring people. It hit me that this isn't some far-off future tech, it's here right now doing a boring job so a person doesn't have to. Has anyone else seen these in their local stores and wondered what they're actually tracking?

Changed your whole view" seems like a lot. It's just a cart with sensors. My store has one too, it bumps into stuff all the time. They're probably just checking stock, not some big AI thing. Feels more like a fancy vacuum cleaner.

Our local Walmart's cart once scanned the same empty shelf for ten minutes straight.

Huh, that's actually kinda creepy when you think about it. @aaron_gonzalez maybe your cart was having a weird existential moment, like it got confused by the emptiness. Nobody's talked about what happens when these things glitch out and start acting like they're seeing ghosts. Could be a hardware issue, but what if it's a software bug where the AI just can't process a truly empty shelf? That ten minute scan might be the cart's way of throwing a little digital tantrum because its data doesn't match reality. Makes you wonder how many other weird behaviors go unnoticed, just because nobody's standing there watching for ten minutes.
