That one convo with a retired data scientist changed my whole take on AI
I was at a coffee shop in Portland last summer and this older guy, Tom, saw me reading a book on neural networks. He laughed and said 'I trained image recognition models in the 90s with 50 pictures of cats and a headache.' We talked for an hour about how he had to hand-code every feature back then. Made me realize how much we take for granted with modern frameworks like TensorFlow - has anyone else met someone who worked on AI before it was cool?

Older tech was harder but it made you actually understand what you were doing.

Ha, you know what @sullivan.piper, I used to roll my eyes at this kind of take. But after a buddy made me set up a retro PC for old games, I finally get it. Debugging a boot error without Google made me learn more about computers than any modern course ever did.
