Why does nobody tell you AI models will just make up fake citations and waste your entire weekend
I spent my whole Saturday and most of Sunday trying to get an AI tool to pull real research links for a project, and it kept handing me sources that looked legit but flat out did not exist, including a journal article from 1998 that I searched for on 4 different databases and never showed up anywhere. It took me about 14 hours total to figure out the tool was just guessing at citations that sounded real, and I only caught it because one author name looked off to me. Has anyone found a way to make these models actually cite stuff they can verify, or is this just how it works now?
