My frozen fries turned into a smoky mess in my kitchen

I was in my apartment in Denver last month, trying to cook a whole bag of frozen fries in my air fryer at once. The basket was too full, and the hot air couldn't move around, so the fries just steamed and dripped grease onto the heating element. My kitchen filled with smoke in about three minutes, and my smoke alarm went off. I had to open all the windows in the cold. Has anyone else had this happen, and what's the right amount to put in for one cook?

Come on, is it really that big of a deal? I see people say this all the time, but it never seems to cause actual problems. It feels like one of those things we all just repeat without really checking. What exactly is supposed to happen?
