My frozen fries were sad until I quit shaking the basket every 2 minutes

I have been air frying frozen fries since I got the thing back in March and always followed the little booklet that said shake halfway. They came out okay but never crispy on all sides, just sort of pale in spots. Last week my neighbor saw me doing it and asked why I was fussing with the basket so much. He said he just leaves his alone for the full 12 minutes at 400 and only flips once at the end. I tried it that night with a bag of Ore-Ida and the difference was huge, way more golden and actually crunchy. I guess all that opening dumped the heat out. Has anyone else found that less shaking works better for other stuff like tater tots or hash browns?
