A retired inspector at O'Hare told me he never signed off on a job without checking the torque wrench calibration log first, and it stuck with me.

He said, 'The log tells you if the tool was honest before you even start,' and now I triple-check ours every Monday morning, but has anyone found a better system than a weekly log check?

That quote about the tool being honest sounds good, but it's putting trust in a piece of paper instead of the tool itself. A log can be faked or filled out wrong just to get the job done. A weekly check is better than nothing, but it means you could be using a bad tool for days before you catch it. I'd rather see a quick check right before each critical use, even if it's just a visual check or a test on a known bolt.

Honestly, I used to think checking the log was just extra paperwork. That quote about the tool being honest first really flipped a switch for me though. Your weekly check is probably the best simple system to catch a problem early.

Right? That quote changed how I see my own tools too.
