Found out from an FAA order that my torque wrench calibration only covers 20% to 100% of its range
Been torquing bolts at the bottom of the scale for 3 years and now I'm second guessing every one of them, so how do you guys handle low range torque on stuff like panel screws?
A 20% to 100% range is pretty normal for click type wrenches, and most shops I know have been running them that way forever. The bottom 20% is where the spring tension gets sketchy, sure, but panel screws and small hardware callouts are usually a range spec anyway, like 12 to 18 inch pounds, not one exact number. Half the time those screws are getting snugged by feel and a torque seal check. Unless you were trying to hit a specific number down at 3 or 4 inch pounds, I would not lose sleep over it.
