Rant: lost 3 hours tracking a fuel leak that was just a loose O-ring

Chased a weeping line on a 172 for half the morning, swapping hoses and fittings. Turns out the O-ring on the quick drain was dry-rotted and cost me $0.80 at the parts store. Has anyone else burned a Saturday on a simple fix because you looked past the obvious spot?

That little rubber ring always hides when you need it most.

Last time that happened I just took a deep breath and started feeling around the crevices of the couch cushions. Took me a good five minutes but I finally found it wedged between the backrest and the arm. Now I keep a couple of those rings in a magnetic dish on the coffee table so I don't have to hunt for them again. Also started buying the bright colored ones because they're WAY easier to spot when they drop. Makes a big difference when you're in a hurry.
