Stopped using the 3-in-1 oil on every hinge after a flap cable seized

Used to hit every control surface hinge with that spray can, figured more lube was better. Then last March at KRDU, a flap cable on a 172 froze up during preflight because the stuff had gummed up with dust over the winter. Switched to a dry graphite film for cable runs and only use the wet stuff on actual bearings now, and I check the AMM for the specific lube type every time. Anyone else had a bad experience with the wrong lube on flight controls?
