Took me 5 years to finally try a borescope on a routine inspection
I always thought borescopes were just overkill for basic checks. But last month I had a Cessna 172 in the hangar in Fresno with a weird oil smell. I borrowed my coworker's cheap scope and found a hairline crack in the crankcase that was barely visible. Now I use one on every compression check and I'm kicking myself for waiting so long. Any of you guys have a tool you ignored for years and then realized it was actually useful?

Did you read that article about the mechanic finding a cracked cylinder with one?

Did you read that article? I used to think those engines were bulletproof.
