Tried the cross-threading trick on a stubborn bolt and it seized up completely
I was wrestling with a corroded engine mount bolt on an old Cessna last week and figured I'd try that trick where you intentionally cross-thread it a bit to get grip on the extractor... instead it locked up so tight we had to drill it out anyway. Left me wondering if that technique has ever really worked for anyone else or if it's just a myth that costs us more time. Has anyone actually had success with the cross-thread-and-extract method, or was I just being too aggressive with it?

Used it on a rusty tractor bolt once and it came right out like magic.

Buddy of mine tried that on his old Blazer last fall. Said he felt it bite and thought he was golden, then the whole extractor snapped off inside. Had to pay a shop to weld a nut onto what was left.

Done that same trick on truck suspension bolts and it worked maybe twice out of ten tries. You really gotta have the bolt already almost moving, any real rust or corrosion and it just makes things worse. What kind of penetrating oil were you using?
