Unpopular opinion: I stopped torqueing to the low end of the range and my comebacks dropped
For years I was that guy who shot for the bottom of the torque range because it was easier on the hardware, and I figured low spec was still spec. Then in March I had two fuel line fittings seep within 40 hours of each other on the same King Air, and the second one came back with a torque wrench right at the low limit. My lead asked me one simple question, whether the low number assumed clean dry threads, and I honestly could not answer him. Turns out I had been lubing threads out of habit, which changes the clamp load big time on some of these values. Now I aim for the middle of the range with dry threads like the manual says, and I have not had a seep since. Anyone else get burned by the low end of a range, or is it just me?
