Finally found a trick for running cable through finished walls without patching everything

Been doing alarm installs for about 6 years now and always dreaded retrofit jobs where the client wanted everything hidden. Last month I had a big house in Raleigh where the homeowner wanted sensors on every window but refused to have any drywall damage. I tried the usual fish tape and glow rods but kept getting stuck on fire blocks. A older guy at the supply house told me to try using a 4 foot length of 1/2 inch PVC pipe as a sleeve to push through insulation and guide the wire past the block. Honestly thought he was messing with me but I gave it a shot on the next house and it worked perfectly. Cut my time on that job by almost 2 hours. Has anyone else found a weird trick like that for tough retrofits?

That PVC trick is legit for fire blocks... I've had the same luck using a piece of 3/8 inch steel brake line bent into an L shape to hook cables around corners where you can't get a fish tape in. Just tape the wire to the short end and it'll grab around studs and blocks without snagging insulation. Saves a ton of headache on those tough runs where you're working blind.

Totally see this in everything from car repairs to cooking honestly. It's like the best solutions are usually the simplest ones nobody thinks about. Like when I learned to use a piece of cardboard to catch oil drips while changing my filter so it doesn't stain the driveway. Or how my mom always uses a damp paper towel under a cutting board to keep it from sliding around. That PVC trick with the insulation is just another example of the same pattern. A cheap everyday object saves you from a huge headache.
