Just realized the panel I mounted in a Tucson garage last month was 2 inches too close to the water heater
I was finishing a 16 zone job off Speedway Blvd when the inspector pointed at my main panel and said it needed 36 inches of clearance, not the 30 I gave it. I had to pull the whole thing, re-drill, and remount it on a Tuesday when the homeowner was home watching me the whole time. Does anyone else measure clearance from the panel edge or the door swing, because I clearly got it mixed up?
That stings because the 36 inch rule in front of a panel is measured from the face, so anything in the working space matters, not just the panel edge. Water heaters get people all the time because the door swing kicks the heater into that zone even if the tank itself looks clear. Next time grab a tape and check from the wall out 36 inches at the floor, then make sure nothing sits in that box, pipes and heater included. Pulling a panel sucks but at least you caught it on the rough instead of after drywall.
