My old mentor told me to always mount motion detectors at 7 feet high - installed one at 8 feet last Tuesday and got a false alarm call within 2 hours

Seven feet is for human detection, eight feet catches cats and raccoons.

Funny you mention that, @fiona_clark. My buddy Mike had a motion light set at seven feet and it kept tripping every night. Turned out a fat raccoon was climbing his bird feeder pole just high enough to trigger it. He moved it up to eight feet and the problem stopped.
