My uncle said I was wasting money on shielded cable for residential runs
He insisted basic 22/4 was fine, but after a year of weird voltage drops in a new Phoenix subdivision, I had to rewire 15 homes. Anyone else get burned by that advice?

I mean, your uncle wasn't totally wrong. I've seen miles of basic 22/4 run in tract homes with zero issues for a decade. That weird voltage drop sounds like a bad batch of wire or a grounding problem in that specific subdivision, not proof you always need shielded.
