Bet you the brick was just the start, what about the mortar joints acting like a giant signal sponge? Nobody ever talks about how that old lime mortar eats frequencies for breakfast.

Respectfully gotta disagree with you @jones.blake. Old lime mortar is actually pretty porous and lets signals pass through way better than modern cement does.
