Spent 3 hours yesterday trying to find a fault on a new motion sensor, only to realize the homeowner's cat had been sitting on the shelf in front of it the entire time.

Why not blame the sensor design first?

The sensor design has been the same for three generations now. That's a long time to ignore a basic hardware flaw, @quinn_nelson. They really need to fix the core issue instead of just tweaking software.

Is it really that big of a deal though? I mean @gibson.robert, my old phone had the exact same sensor design and it worked fine for years till I smashed it. People act like every minor quirk is a hardware flaw that needs a complete redesign. If it ain't totally broken don't go rebuilding the whole thing from scratch.
