That call from a homeowner about their own system got me second guessing how I do things
Last week a customer in Reno called me a week after I installed their new panel. They said they changed a battery themselves and now the keypad was beeping twice every hour. I went out there ready to find they wired it backwards. Turned out they read the manual and figured it out fine, but they asked me why I never showed them how to do basic stuff like that. I always thought keeping some knowledge to myself meant more service calls, but honestly it just made them feel stupid and me look like I was hiding something. Now I'm wondering if teaching customers everything I can is better for trust in the long run, or if I'm just giving away work that pays the bills. Anyone else dealt with this fine line between being helpful and protecting your income?
Man, that line about them feeling stupid hits hard. I bet if you walk every customer through the basics they'll call you first for the stuff that actually needs a pro, not try to DIY it and mess it up worse.
