Thought those cheap magnetic contact shims were a gimmick, then a 1920s house in Cincinnati changed my mind
I picked up a pack of magnetic shims at a supply house in Cincinnati last month just to fill out an order. On a job in Hyde Park, the old wood frames had settled so bad that every door contact gap was over an inch and I was about to order recessed sensors for 12 windows. I tried one shim on a crooked window, snapped it in, and the gap closed clean in about 30 seconds. Ended up finishing that whole house with 4 shims and no new sensors. Anyone else use these on old settled frames, or do you just swap to recessed every time?
Man, this is the same thing as when people buy a whole new phone because the charging port got lint in it. We love jumping to the big fix when a tiny one does the trick. Good on you for trying the cheap thing first instead of defaulting to recessed.
