Found a weird trick to stop my basement from flooding when it rains heavy

Ngl, I deal with water in my basement every spring in Edmonton. Tried gutters, downspout extensions, even regraded part of the yard. Nothing really worked. Then my neighbour Bob comes over during that big storm last May and says 'just drill a couple holes in the window well and fill em with gravel.' I thought he was joking. But I got desperate after my sump pump failed twice. Drilled 4 holes, threw in some pea gravel, and it actually drains now. Water just goes into the ground instead of pooling against the foundation. Has anyone else tried something simple like this that seemed too dumb to work?

Well, Bob's got more sense than half the contractors I've paid.

Ha! I tried duct taping a garden hose to my downspout once. Not my finest moment.
