Furnace broke in January and the repair bill still stings

My Carrier furnace died on a -32 day in Edmonton back in January. The inducer motor went and even with a warranty the labour came to $780 from Arpi's. I know everyone says to buy new if it's over 15 years old but mine is only 8 and I can't justify replacing a whole unit for one part. Has anyone else had luck just fixing older furnaces piece by piece instead of swapping them out?

I know everyone says to buy new if it's over 15 years old" - yeah but that's such a blanket rule though. My furnace is 22 years old and I just put a new blower motor in it for $400 instead of dropping $4k on a whole new unit. Every time something breaks I just fix that one thing, and so far it's been way cheaper than replacing the whole thing. I figure as long as the heat exchanger is still solid and the main stuff works, replacing small parts piece by piece makes total sense. Plus you know what you've got with an old unit versus the gamble of a new one that might have its own problems right out of the box.

Hell yeah, same here. Parts are cheap, whole units ain't.
