Just realized my furnace filter has a lifespan I never paid attention to

I hit the 90 day mark on my furnace filter last week and the thing was practically black. I always thought you could push it to 6 months like the box says. Then I checked the manual for my unit and it specifically says change every 60 days in Edmonton winters. That dust buildup cost me an extra $80 on my gas bill this January compared to last year. Has anyone else had their utility company flag unusually high usage from a dirty filter?

Oh boy, here we go again. I see people jump to conclusions all the time about filters. You sure it wasn't something else driving that $80 increase? January was colder than last year in a lot of places, so your furnace ran more anyway. I change mine every 3 months like clockwork and my gas bill was up too just because of the weather. Those black filters look scary but they're still doing their job right up until they clog. Most guys I know in the trades say every 90 days is fine unless you live in a dust bowl or have pets.

That's a fair point about the weather. My gas bill was up this January too, and I didn't change a thing with my filter schedule. It's easy to blame the filter when it's probably just the cold.
