Neighbor's fence guy quoted me $4k, then the real invoice showed up

Honestly, my neighbor in St. Albert recommended his fence crew and they gave me a quote of $4,100 for 80 feet of cedar. After the work was done they handed me an invoice for $5,300 and said the extra was for 'uneven grading' they never mentioned on day one. Has anyone else had a contractor pull the surprise surcharge after the fact, and did you push back or just pay it?
