That one neighbor who showed me how to check my eaves troughs saved my basement

Last spring I had water pooling around my foundation after a heavy rain in Red Deer. My neighbor Bob came over while I was digging a trench and showed me my eaves troughs were completely clogged with pine needles. He spent 20 minutes up on a ladder cleaning them out and pointed out the downspout extensions were too short. I had lived here 3 years and never checked them once. After that I bought a leaf guard kit for $40 and now I clear them every November. Has anyone else had a neighbor step in before a big repair bill hit? What did they spot that you missed?

I mean, water pooling near your foundation isn't great, but it sounds like a pretty minor fix for a pretty common problem. People act like a little rain is the end of the world.
