Warning: I was dead wrong about tankless water heaters in Alberta
I swore up and down that a tankless unit would freeze up or disappoint us in a Calgary winter, so I put off buying one for 3 years. Last fall our old 40 gallon tank finally died and I grabbed a Rinnai on sale at a place off Barlow Trail for $1,400, and it has handled -35C mornings without a hiccup. The thing that sold me was a plumber buddy telling me to insulate the intake and exhaust pipes properly, which I did with 2 inch foam sleeves. Anyone else running one through a few winters up north and how has it held up?
