Warning: my furnace guy in Red Deer taught me the filter trick nobody mentions
Had a guy out to my place in Red Deer back in November because my furnace was short cycling. He popped the panel, pulled the filter, and just held it up to the light. Asked me when I last changed it. I said every 3 months like clockwork. He laughed and said that is what everyone says, but the real issue is people buy the cheapest 1 inch filter they can find and it chokes the airflow. He told me to run the cheap fiberglass ones, the $4 ones, not the thick pleated ones, because a furnace blower is not a HEPA unit. Cost me $180 for the visit and a filter swap fixed it. I had been buying $20 filters for two winters thinking I was doing something good. Turns out I was starving the thing the whole time. Has anyone else had a tech tell them the fancy filter is actually the problem?
My husband keeps telling me the expensive filters are the reason our house still smells like burnt dust but I keep buying them anyway because it feels like the "responsible" choice (you know, like eating a salad after a burger). So reading this is a little bit of a gut punch, not gonna lie. The cheap fiberglass thing makes total sense now that I think about it, because our blower has to pull air through a pizza box with all that fancy pleating. Guess I've been paying $20 a pop to slowly suffocate my own furnace for two years.
