Am I the only one who thought those $99 window guys at the State Fair were a scam?
So I got a quote from one of those booths at the State Fair last September for 6 windows and it was $1,800 less than the big company here in Albuquerque. I figured the fine print would get me, but my neighbor on Copper Ave had them done in October and the windows are actually solid with no leaks so far. My problem now is I can't tell if the big company was just way overpriced or if I got lucky with the install crew. Anyone here actually use one of those fair booth companies and have it go bad?
Check the install crew, not the company name. Those fair booths usually just sell the job and then sub it out to whoever is cheap that week, so your neighbor on Copper Ave might have gotten a good crew while the next house gets a hack. Ask your neighbor for the foreman's name and request that same guy when you sign, and get the warranty in writing before you pay a dime. The big company isn't always better, they just charge more because of overhead and ads, so the price gap doesn't mean much on its own.
How do you actually verify the crew before you sign though? The foreman's name from your neighbor helps but these subs rotate guys in and out depending on the season, so the guy who did their roof last spring might be on a different job by the time yours gets scheduled. Did your neighbor get anything in writing that tied a specific crew to the job, or was it just a handshake deal with the sales guy?
