Can we talk about how plaster walls just eat drywall anchors for breakfast?

I tried hanging a shelf in my 1920s bungalow near Nob Hill and went through three different anchor types before realizing masonry screws are the only thing that actually hold. Has anyone else dealt with Albuquerque's old clay plaster just crumbling on you?

Right? I swear my 1920s place near Old Town eats anchors for a midnight snack. Tried those green plastic ones, they just spun in the wall like a top. Then I got creative with toggle bolts, turned it into a confetti party of crumbled plaster on the floor. Masonry screws finally did the trick, but I had to pre-drill with a masonry bit and hold the drill just right or the whole wall would just give up. So yeah, welcome to Albuquerque's lovely "let's hope the wall actually exists" club.
