Ditch the plastic pipe threader after 10 years of pain
I used to drag out a Ridgid 300 every time I needed to thread galvanized iron pipe for gas lines. It worked fine but setting it up took 20 minutes and cleaning the oily mess was a chore. Last summer I picked up a close quarters ratcheting threader for about $150 and it changed everything for small jobs. Now I can thread a 3/4 inch pipe right in the trench without hauling heavy gear around. It's not for big runs but for simple repairs it saves me an hour per job. Has anyone else switched to a manual threader for residential work?

Stick with the manual threader for small jobs, it's a no brainer. I've been using a ratcheting one for years now and I'd never go back to that heavy Ridgid 300 for residential stuff. The time you save not having to setup and clean up is huge. Plus you don't have to wrestle with oil dripping everywhere or worry about power cords in a trench. It's just faster and simpler all around.

Man it's wild how many things in life are like that. The simple old school tool is often way faster than dragging out the big machine for a tiny job. I see this everywhere from cooking to car repairs.
