I finally figured out why my swamp cooler pad kept falling apart after just one summer on the west side.
The mineral buildup from our hard water was gluing the aspen to the frame, so I started soaking the old pads in a vinegar solution for an hour before trying to pull them out, which saved me from tearing the plastic grid last weekend.

Actually, you might be making it worse by soaking them in vinegar. The acid can eat away at the plastic mesh over time if you do it too often. I had a neighbor who switched to using a descaler solution with a brush instead of full soaks and his grids lasted three summers before cracking. Have you ever tried spraying them down with a hose after a light vinegar mist instead of the full bath?

It's funny how so many household fixes just come down to fighting mineral deposits.

So true, it's like half my cleaning routine is just dealing with hard water. Do you use straight vinegar or do you water it down? I've had to soak showerheads and even the little filter in my coffee maker the same way.
