I finally found a trick for drywall mud that doesn't crack in the desert heat

So I've been patching holes in my garage in Albuquerque and the mud kept cracking after a day or two. Drove me nuts because it's so dry here even with a humidifier running. I tried adding more water, mixing slower, even different brands but nothing worked. Then my neighbor who does drywall for a living told me to mist the wall with a spray bottle before applying the mud. He said the existing drywall sucks up moisture too fast and that's what causes the cracks. I tried it on a pretty big patch last weekend and it actually worked perfectly. Not a single crack after three days. Has anyone else in this dry climate had luck with that trick or another method?

Ha yeah I used to roll my eyes at stuff like that, always thought it was just some old timer myth lol. But after dealing with cracked patches in Phoenix for years I finally tried it and man I was totally wrong. Pre wetting the wall really does make a huge difference, its one of those simple things you kick yourself for not trying sooner.

I mean honestly that's genius for how simple it is.
