I finally understood why my grandpa insisted on cast iron pipe

Talking to a plumber last week who said modern PVC is fine but he's already seeing 20-year-old joints fail in this clay-heavy soil. Makes me wonder if the old ways really were built for the long haul or if we just got lucky back then.

already seeing 20-year-old joints fail" is great, that's just long enough for the warranty to expire and leave you holding the bag. Guess grandpa's rusty pipes had more staying power than we give 'em credit for.

I read somewhere clay soil actually grabs PVC and pulls it apart, so @lily230 you're spot on about those warranties.
