I was set on a stucco patch kit until a guy at Ferguson's on Menaul told me to just use a bag of base coat and a trowel.

He said, 'Those kits are for tiny cracks, but your house has that classic Albuquerque sand finish, so you need to match the texture with a real base coat and a little sand from your own yard,' which saved me about $40 and gave me a much better fix.

Matching the texture is the hard part, but those kits come with a float and instructions that help. A bag of base coat is messy and you have to mix it just right. For a beginner, the extra cost might be worth avoiding a patch that looks worse.

That Ferguson's guy gave solid advice, but wadebailey has a point about the mess. How much time did you spend mixing and matching the sand from your yard to get the color right? I tried that once and the shade was off for weeks until it fully dried.
