My neighbor's 60-year-old plaster trick saved my bathroom reno

Old Mr. Gutierrez next door saw me scraping drywall last Tuesday. He told me to wet the plaster with a spray bottle and wait 15 minutes before scraping. I thought he was nuts, my buddy swore by dry scraping. Tried his way on one wall, the old stuff came off in huge sheets instead of dust clouds. Saved me about 4 hours on that one section alone. The other walls I did dry took twice as long and made a huge mess. Has anyone else gotten weird old-timer advice that actually beat the modern method?
