Neighbor said my dirt was too compacted for rain to soak in

Told me to aerate my lawn before the monsoon season and I finally did it last weekend and water actually pools on the surface now instead of running straight down the street.

Aeration is mainly for letting air and water get down to the roots, not for stopping runoff. If water is pooling on top, you might have a thin layer of thatch or the soil is still too dense a few inches down. Did you pull cores out, or just poke holes? Poking holes without pulling cores can actually seal up the surface.

Pull cores every time or you're mostly just making a mess. Solid tines compact the soil around the hole which makes runoff worse in my experience. Have you tried doing a heavy core aeration after a wet day to see if that changes things?
