Old timer at Home Depot told me to stop using drywall screws for subflooring
I'd always just used whatever screws were cheapest for putting down subfloor plywood. This older guy in the lumber aisle at the Wyoming location said I was asking for squeaks and popped heads down the road. Switched over to actual deck screws for the last room I did and honestly the whole thing feels way more solid, especially around the edges near the ductwork.

Well now, that's a shame about your buddy's shed floor. I've been there too, and that popping sound just gets under your skin after a while. @wendy_bell83 is exactly right about those heads stripping out, I had the same trouble with a bathroom remodel a few years back. Drywall screws are brittle by design, they just don't have the shear strength for flooring.

... and that old timer was probably right about the squeaks. My buddy used drywall screws on his shed subfloor and now every step sounds like a haunted house. He's got this one corner near the door that pops like a firecracker every time you walk over it. Deck screws are way better, the heads don't strip out as easy either. I switched after my first subfloor job started clicking like a worn out bicycle chain.
