Vent: my "cheap" roof repair from 3 summers ago just cost me $4,800

Back in August 2021, a guy in a truck knocked on my door in the North Valley, said he could patch a small leak for $300 cash. He used some gray goop and was gone in 40 minutes. Last week during that big rain, water poured through the same spot and wrecked my drywall in the hallway. The roofer who came out said the goop actually trapped moisture and rotted two sheets of plywood underneath. He had to redo the whole section and replace the insulation. Has anyone else dealt with those door-to-door roofers, or is it just me being an easy mark?

Girl I feel you. My neighbor in Los Ranchos got burned the same way back in 2019, some dude with a magnet sign on his truck sealed a flashing gap with silicone. Fast forward a year and the whole corner of her garage was rotted out, cost her like $2,500 to fix properly. I almost fell for one of those guys last spring but I asked for a license number and he just got in his truck and left. Honestly now I only use roofers that have a local address and a website, and I always check the NM licensing board site before I pay anyone. It sucks that we even gotta do that homework just to not get scammed.
