Hot take: my brother in Tulsa swore the truck would be fine without a transmission flush, and he was dead wrong
Back in October my brother kept telling me to skip the $180 transmission flush on my 2014 Silverado because he ran his own truck to 200k miles without one. I went ahead and did it anyway at a shop here in Tulsa, and the fluid that came out was black and full of grit. Two weeks later his truck started slipping on the highway outside Broken Arrow and now he is staring down a $3,400 rebuild. I keep going back and forth on whether I should have pushed him harder to just get it done. Has anyone else had a family member give you car advice that turned out to be completely wrong?
That line about his truck slipping on the highway outside Broken Arrow hits close to home. I read a thread on a Chevy forum a while back where a guy said the same thing, that his fluid looked like coffee grounds at 150k because the truck had never been serviced. The old "lifetime fluid" idea is what gets people, and a lot of folks mix that up with "never change it." I get why you feel bad, but you did the right thing on your own truck and you can't drive his. Best you can do now is help him pick a shop that won't gouge him on the rebuild.
