My dad told me to just ask for a raise, and I spent three weeks overthinking the email before finally sending it.
He said 'just be direct and list what you've done', so I did, and my boss agreed to a 5% increase in our meeting yesterday, so I guess the simple advice was right.

That's awesome, but just fyi, a 5% raise is basically just keeping up with inflation. For a real promotion you gotta ask for way more next time.

He's right about inflation eating that up. I learned to ask for 15 or 20 percent when moving up a level. The worst they can do is counter.
