PSA: Overheard my neighbor planning a fake charity event for small business owners

I was at a coffee shop downtown on Tuesday and heard a guy on the phone talking about setting up a fake charity event to collect donations from local shops. He said he was going to claim it was for a kids' sports team but keep 70% of the cash for himself. I thought about it all night, like is that really what he meant or did I mishear him? Has anyone else run into something like this where you overheard something sketchy but weren't sure if you should warn people or mind your own business?
