Remember when you could just send a text without analyzing every word?

I used to write a simple 'hey, how are you' and hit send. Now I spend 15 minutes wondering if 'hey' is too casual, if I should use an emoji, and if the person will think I'm mad if I don't. Did we all just get more anxious, or is it the phones?

My friend Sarah spent 30 minutes on a two word text last week, which seems a bit much.

Was it the phones or did we just get more data to worry about? You used to send a text into the void. Now you see they read it at 2:04 PM and didn't reply. You get a notification they're typing, then it stops. That little gray bubble creates a whole new layer of stress that a simple 'hey' never had to deal with before.
