The 'overqualified' warning I ignored cost me 2 months of failed applications
Last fall I kept applying to receptionist and data entry spots because I figured a pay cut was better than nothing. A counselor at the workforce center in Austin told me to stop, that hiring managers see overqualified as a flight risk. I ignored her for 2 months and got zero callbacks out of 40 applications. Finally tried for a junior IT role at a clinic, got it in 3 weeks, and the pay is actually $2 more an hour. Was I overthinking my own resume, or is that 'overqualified' label just a way to filter out people who need the job more? Anyone else had a counselor's blunt advice actually work out?
