Took me 5 years to realize I was holding my knife wrong

I've been cooking at home for years and always wondered why my wrist ached after chopping veggies. Last week I watched a random TikTok from a chef in Chicago showing how to grip a knife properly with your thumb and index finger pinching the blade near the handle. I tried it on an onion and my cuts were way more even in half the time. My hand didn't hurt for once. Turns out I was holding the handle tight like a hammer grip the whole time. Has anyone else had that moment where a tiny change in technique just clicked?

My buddy who went to culinary school said the same thing, it's wild how much better your knife work gets when you stop choking the handle.

Dude yes! Exactly this. I used to death grip my chef's knife like I was trying to strangle it. Then I watched a video where this old pro just casually rested his thumb and index finger on the blade right above the handle. Took me a few weeks to get used to it but now I can slice through an onion without even thinking about it. The control you get is insane. It's like the knife becomes part of your hand instead of some clumsy tool you're wrestling with.
