Update: I stopped using the self-checkout at my Kroger in Dayton after 5 months of feeling watched
I started avoiding the self-checkout at the Kroger on Smithville Road about 5 months ago because I felt like the cameras and the one employee watching 6 screens were judging every item I scanned. Then a cashier named Darnell told me the store actually moved two people off regular lanes to monitor self-checkout because shrink was up 14% there. Now I just wait in the regular line, but was I really being paranoid about those cameras or does everyone feel that way?
Used to roll my eyes at people who said they felt watched at self-checkout, figured it was all in their head. But then I noticed the screen at my store actually shows your own face back at you while you scan, like a little video of yourself the whole time, and once you see that you can't unsee it. That plus knowing they pulled workers off real lanes just to babysit the cameras tells me it's not paranoia at all. Sounds like Darnell gave you the real answer.
