A chat with the owner at the Yellow City Coffee Roasters made me think about hiring
I was grabbing a coffee there last Tuesday and got talking to the owner, Mark, about how hard it is to find good help. He said he had to interview 15 people over two months before he found one barista who really clicked with the shop's vibe. It wasn't just about knowing how to make a latte, but about fitting in with the team and the customers. Has anyone else in town had that much trouble filling just one spot lately?

Man, that reminds me of this little bookstore I used to love. The owner hired her niece, who was a huge reader, but the kid just wanted to argue with customers about their taste in books. Killed the whole friendly, quiet feel of the place in a week. It's wild how one wrong person can change the air in a room, you know? That vibe is so fragile.

Got me thinking about my last trip to the hardware store. The kid at the register was on his phone, ignored me for a solid minute, then rang me up without a word. Didn't even look up. Mark's right, it's not just about knowing the job. You can teach someone to work a machine, but you can't teach them to give a damn about being there. That vibe thing is everything, and it's in short supply. I'd rather be short staffed than hire someone who makes the place feel worse.
