Got blindsided by a $450 city permit fee I never saw coming
Found out from the permits office after I already ordered materials that Amarillo charges $450 just to pull a basic commercial sign permit, and I'm wondering how many other small business owners here got hit with surprise fees they didn't budget for.

Bet check if the fee includes a refundable deposit.

Did you check if @victorbutler's suggestion about a refundable deposit might apply here? Where I'm at, some towns charge an upfront fee that goes toward the final inspection if you don't mess anything up. Your mileage may vary, but it's worth asking if any of that $450 comes back when you pass inspection.
