I think the Big Texan's free 72 oz steak is hurting our local restaurant scene
I run a small lunch spot on 6th Ave and I have to say the free 72 oz steak challenge gets way too much credit as a boost for Amarillo. Last Saturday I watched three tour buses pull up there, and not one of those folks walked over to any of the shops or cafes on our block. I get maybe two extra tables a week from tourists, and my food cost went up $140 in one month just trying to keep up with what people expect to pay. Here is the thing nobody says out loud: that challenge pulls people off the highway, feeds them one giant meal, and sends them right back on I-40. Our local spots need foot traffic that actually spreads out, not one big show. Am I wrong here, or has anyone else noticed tourists skip the rest of us?
