PSA: Picking the wrong web developer cost me 3 months and $2,400

I had to choose between a local guy in Amarillo who built sites on Wix for $800 and a team out of Lubbock that quoted me $3,200 for a custom WordPress setup. I cheaped out with the local guy and ended up with a site that crashed every time I got more than 50 visitors at once. Had to scrap it and go with the Lubbock crew anyway, plus lost a bunch of potential customers during the wait. Any other small business owners here been burned by going for the lowest bid on website work?
