Rant: choosing between two vendors for my shop's logo was a nightmare

I had to pick between a local designer charging $500 and a Fiverr person asking $50, went with the local guy after seeing the Fiverr samples looked like clip art. The local one took 3 weeks but nailed my vibe for the barbecue place, has anyone else dealt with sticker shock on custom design work?

Did you try asking the local guy to show you some rough sketches before you committed? I had a similar situation a few years back when I was redoing a sign for my shop. I went with the more expensive local guy because he came recommended by another business owner I trusted. The cheap online options just felt like a gamble and I was worried about getting something that looked like a template. In the end, the extra money was worth it because he actually listened to what I wanted and made changes without charging extra. That kind of back and forth is hard to get when you're just sending messages to someone you've never met.

Yeah totally get what you're saying @torres.leo. That bit about "the cheap online options just felt like a gamble" hits home. It's funny how we'll drop serious money on stuff like a new phone without blinking but then try to cheap out on things like signs or design work where the quality really matters. I've noticed this pattern in a lot of areas of life honestly. Like people will pay top dollar for a steak dinner but then try to find the cheapest lawyer or plumber possible and act surprised when the results aren't great. There's just something about seeing the person's face and knowing they have a reputation to protect in your own town that makes a difference. You can't get that same peace of mind from some random email address.
